LA CASA DE LA CAMPANA, FINESTRAT, ALICANTE
Our property in the region of Alicante is in a pretty mountain village, dating back over two thousand years – a typical, five storey village house, perched high up in the historic centre of Finestrat; reached only by picturesque, cobbled pedestrian streets and located just below the village chapel and its pretty park. The rooftop houses a jacuzzi for star gazing and a barbeque for lunches in the sun, and the views from here are breathtaking. The house is the tallest in the village and guests can enjoy 360 º views of the beautiful church dome and bell tower down below, which give the house its name (campana is spanish for bell), the majestic Puigcampana mountain, the valley below all the way to the sea and in the distance, the seaside town of Villajoyosa. Perched high above the surrounding countryside, yet only a couple of streets away from the bakers shop and friendly coffee bars and restaurants, this peaceful, quiet location enables our guests to immerse themselves in this unique historic village and enjoy its rich culture and history. The municipal Tourist office, only a stone´s through from the house arranges with the village town hall to offer expert historians to accompany those who wish to learn all about the moorish and christian conquest of this area and the village boasts many local amenities including a beautiful municipal swimming pool during the summer months.
The house has been tastefully restored with modern conveniences including wifi and air-conditioning, yet has retained much of its original charm with wooden windows, doors and shutters, a wood-burning stove in the living area and master bedroom and an authentic Spanish kitchen, with traditional blue tiles. The property has two lovely terraces, complete with tables and a barbeque and tables and chairs out front, on the peaceful pedestrian street. During the evening guests can join the village community and enjoy a glass of wine ´on the street´as many residents have during years gone by, immersing themselves seemlessly into village life; the pedestrian street outside the house is very peaceful and guests can dine out there if they prefer this to the rooftop barbeque area.
The sleeping accommodation comprises:
The master suite, with a king size bed, which can also provide two large singles at our guests´ request; two arm chairs and a designer bath in front of the wood burning stove. It has an ensuite bathroom with a shower, air conditioning and two double doors with juliette balconies overlooking the park.
The second bedroom has a double bed and also offers an ensuite bathroom with a shower and a designer bath in front of one of the two juliette balconies and air conditioning.
The third bedroom offers either a king size bed or two large, single beds. It has its own private bathroom up a small flight of stairs, air conditioning and a little balcony overlooking the street below the house, which hardly ever has traffic as it is very narrow, serves only three or four other houses and is only used to transport our guests and their cases on arrival.
Accommodation for up to a further five guests can be arranged, liable to availability, in an adjoining apartment which offers a further double bedroom and bed-sitting room with air conditioning.
It must be noted that this house is unusual as a Rustic Escapes property in being suitable only for guests able to use stairs; all other Rustic Escape properties have specially prepared bedrooms for guests with limited mobility. La Casa de la Campana, because of its historic nature, being built into the hilltop, is arranged over four stories; with the kitchen and open plan dining and sitting rooms on the ground floor and a modern WC and laundry room for coats and cases reached off the entrance hall which leads out to the seating area on the pedestrian walkway. Up a small flight of stairs a further terrace is reached offering a private outdoor space for dining. A further flight of stairs takes guests to the first of the bedrooms, which each enjoy the privacy of their own floor. The second bedroom is on the next floor, with an ensuite bathroom; the master bedroom taking up the entire third floor, which was the old living quarters of the house with lovely views and an open, wood burning stove. A further stairway leads guests to the roof terrace, where, as is characteristic of all Rustic Escapes properties which given their location are unable to house a swimming pool, we have installed a jacuzzi for star gazing. A sink, sun bathing deck, barbeque and table and chairs are available so that guests can enjoy cooking and dining in the open air. The stairs are a small price to pay for the amazing views to be enjoyed from the rooftop. The stairs all have banisters and are the only difficulty for those with limited mobility; the house itself can be reached by ramps available in the historic old centre, and the streets are not steep. The house is reached easily and we can transport guests and cases to very near the door, only thirty feet away; however it can only be reached on foot; which is part of its charm and transports guests back to an era without vehicles, enjoying the peace and quiet of times gone by.

LA CASA DE LA CAMPANA, FINESTRAT
La Casa de la Campana gets its name from the bell tower of the church which is just below the house in the picturesque mountain village of Finestrat. Finestrat is a village with over 2000 years of history. From its privileged position, perched high in the mountains with views across the valley below, it has served well as a safe haven for both the early Ibero civilisations and later moorish and christian communities.
The historic centre is built into the hilltop, crowned by the ruins of the ancient battlements and a small chapel, surrounded by a pretty park and an amphitheatre for musical events. The ancient, cobbled streets are charming and lined by pretty village houses. The pedestrian walkway outside La Casa de la Campana is one of several streets lined with beautiful climbing plants such as bouganvillea and jasmine and leading to panoramic viewpoints. There are daily guided tours around the historic centre for those guests interested in learning more about the areas´s history.
While quiet and peaceful the village is home to almost 5000 residents, most of whom speak English, and it boasts good municipal services; a health centre, library, weekly market, several good bakers shops, small supermarkets , numerous bars and restaurants and a large municipal swimming pool, open in July and August and free for our guests. There is also free parking in an indoor municipal car park, however guests do not need a car.
As is the case with all Rustic Escape properties, while La Casa de la Campana is located in a tiny, historic village within a rural location, it is both near the sea and well connected by local transport to larger towns and an airport.
The municipality of Finestrat stretches from the mountains and the historic old town to a seaside area at the bottom of the valley, with a bustling seafront, reached after a fifteen minute bus ride, full of restaurants and bars and a beautiful sandy beach. The village is just seven kilometres from the enchanting moorish seaside town of Villajoyosa and the bustling vibrant tourist hub of Benidorm. Alicante city and its airport is only one hour away and the historic city of Valencia, with a further major airport is one and a half hours up the coast. The well known theme parks of Terra Mitica, Terra Natura and Agua world are also only five minutes from the village, along with a go-karting centre. Down in the valley Finestrat also offers guests access to numerous golf courses and a large, modern shopping centre, La Marina, with all the well-known brands and fast food on offer.
Finestrat is also well known by walkers and mountaineers for its Puigcampana mountain. This can be reached from the village and at 1410 metres high it is the highest coastal mountain in Spain and an excellent example of Jurassic formation. It is famous for what is known as the ´0 km climb´, as one of its faces can be ascended by mountaineers, who climb 1000 metres up an almost vertical cliff face. Not for the faint hearted. More gentler climbs are possible passing a natural fountain, called the ´Font del Molí´and Rustic Escapes can arrange for guests to enjoy bike and horse rides up the mountain.
What with its quiet, historic village, hipermarkets, seaside resort and mountainous landscape Finestrat really does have somethng for everyone!
Finestrat is on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante; it gets its name ,´white´,because of the many sunny days it enjoys throughout the year and its temperate climate. Alicante is on the east coast of Spain and also near the pretty coastal resorts of Javea and Denia.
