Look what we found!

I promise you…I have never found such a strange and portentous artefact!

I have been busy, the last two weeks; restoring and re-designing our most recent Rustic Escape, in Moraira. It is a magnificent example of a farmstead, typical of those found throughout the province of Alicante.  It is made of local stone and is a lovely solid house, set in the rolling countryside near the lovely seaside town of Moraira, a five-minute walk from Teulada, yet ´deep´in the countryside, amidst the olive trees and vineyards. It typifies the ideal properties that we are constantly on the search for;

  • a distinctive property in a rural location
  • close to a small village
  • well communicated with a larger town and airport ( both Valencia and Alicante airports are only an hour away)
  • with an open fireplace and a swimming pool
  • Now its my job to inject style, comfort, cleanliness and create the perfect Rustic Escape!

Rustic Escapes; Rural life in style and comfort. Unique experiences in the countryside.

For once it is quite a simple job. The house is large, albeit slightly stuck in the late sixties and not in a good way. So we are putting our stamp on it and creating five beautiful bedrooms with bathrooms en suite and rejigging the living space to ensure that the downstairs offers our guests an ample and luminous area to dine and relax with an authentic kitchen…in style and comfort.

Ca Olivar will be ready for June! A characterful authentic farmstead in the countryside, near to the picturesque seaside town of Moraira, Alicante,Spain

Now to the ‘artefact` featured above. One of my first jobs, when preparing a Rustic Escape is to find its hidden gems; its character; I uncover its history and its origins; discovering our rich rural heritage and the stories each property tells us. Who lived here before? Who tilled the soil around us? What were their lives like? How did they live?

I love uncovering artifacts; of all kinds. Our rural Alquería, Partida de la Mar, in Valencia is an old drying shed, for tobacco and the nurturing of silk worms, surrounded by agricultural fields which provided onions, potatoes and artichokes to its residents. Yet here, when we restored the old buildings we found piles of ceramic electrical components, beautiful in their own right yet not really `agricultural`at all. They had been used to bolster up the foundations in a later outhouse built to house an ox and the donkey. I soon found their likely provenance…in an electrical factory down the road built in the 1920s. My farmers had enjoyed a symbiotic relationship with the factory. We dug up piles of ceramic plugs along with all manner of agricultural tools, now in a mini museum on the terrace. In Ibiza, at our dear Can Toni Pera, we found, buried beneath the soil, the remains of a grand olive press; it is now a proud exhibit. Yet this beats them all!  Obviously not Roman ( a teasingly modern nod to nobility as an addition to the garden) we came upon this hidden torso, buried in the undergrowth. We are letting it stay, albeit saving its modesty with clumps of lavender and daisies. I have to admit it not being entirely to my taste as I prefer the `real`artifacts we find, such as the lovely 17th century window frame I uncovered while restoring the  old kitchen. But it stays. As with all our properties. It tells a tale and adds to the character of Ca Olivar. Come and see it for yourself one day!

Deberás venir a verlo algún día.
