Rustic Escapes for dogs!

Your dog will love Monk House, our new Rustic Escape!

I have spent two weeks this month preparing our new Rustic Escape, Monk House, in the beautiful rural town of Petworth, West Sussex, and was joined by my sister and her dog, Finlay. The house is ideal for dogs as it has a beautiful walled garden and a 50 metre lawn which runs all the way down to the lovely Shimmings´valley. To my delight, when it was time for ´walkies´we followed a couple with a dog, only to find the most amazing parkland either of us had ever seen…just across the road! Through the ´cowyard´doors, across the road from Monk House you enter a handsome, brickwork tunnel to emerge into a magical landscape with green lawns as far as the eye can see , a lake, the beautiful, grandiose facade of Petworth House and  trees that are hundreds of years old. You can walk for hours through the 700 acres of woodlands teaming with deer, pheasants and other wildlife and feel miles from anywhere. Petworth Park was designed by the renowned Capability Brown and boasts the longest perimeter wall of any parkland in Europe, containing more than 750 deer. Well before the Georgian era Henry VIII is known to have hunted in the park during the 1500s and today the National Trust care for both the park and the grand house, allowing access to the public daily. It is beautiful.

Monk House. A historic house built in 1425, Now a Rustic Escape.

Monk House

Our Monk House was here well before Henry VIII!  Originally one of three farmers´homes, the house served as a sanctuary to the more than 1400 monks and friars ousted from the catholic abbeys and monasteries dissolved during his reign, providing a home to religious pilgrims and the relics they sought to save as catholic churches and monasteries were re-possessed by Thomas Cromwell and his evangelists. I have found what looks to be a tunnel from us to the nearby church of St Mary´s and the house is full of intriguing nooks and crannies. With authentic thick stone walls and exposed wooden beams dating from Tudor times Monk House has lovely creaky wooden floors. It is a treasure for any historian and , now , I have discovered, for dog lovers too!

Monk House is available now to welcome guests. Book now and bring your dog!
