Enjoying the rice harvest in Valencia with Rustic EscapesTracy Ibberson
Rustic Escapes`guests joined our expert local concierge, Eduardo, for a trip to see the rice being harvested around the Albufera lagoon, 10 minutes from our alquería, Partida de la Mar in Almassera. It was fascinating. Tractors came and went, piling high the enormous mountains of rice while our guests were invited to join farmers as they inspected their crops. The ´Senia´, ´Bomba´and `Albufera´rices are all harvested locally and the guests were invited to walk amongst the rice mountains and to see the difference between these. Later they enjoyed lunch at the beautiful, family run restaurant, L´Establiment, where they tried local wines and were introduced to the local delicacy, ´All i Pebre´. These are eels caught in the lake and stewed with potatoes in a delicious tomato and garlic sauce. This was followed by squid in ink, fish croquettes , a fresh tomato salad and a seafood paella. All farmed locally! Rustic Escapes has as one of ts main aims the celebration of local food and culture; enabling guests to learn about the history and techniques of agricultural practices that go back hundreds of years and help to make each of Rustic Escapes`distinct locations unique. Personalised experiences like visiting the rice harvest are once in a lifetime opportunities not to be missed.
