(where more than 4 guests stay: free accomodation and experiences; a supplement for transport payable)

This escape includes experiences (for up to 4 people) where you are accompanied by our concierges including (for a 3 night stay) a visit to the El Palmar village and the Albufera lake with a complimentary tasting of a local delicacy, All i Pebre, a boat trip on the lake and a visit to the central market followed by a city tour and a paella workshop with a local expert. For 5 nights enjoy a cookery workshop amongst the orange trees. See ITINERARY AND WHAT’S INCLUDED for full details.

For this escape, your own transport is not required. Guests are collected from the airport and welcomed by our local representative. A concierge package is included, with transport and accompaniment on included visits. When not with the concierge, the house guests have unlimited use of 5 bicycles and there are tram stations 1/2 km from house, offering direct connection with the nearby city of Valencia. Bars and restaurants are within easy reach.

Lead the lifestyle of an authentic Valencian farmer while enjoying a peaceful and comfortable stay in a converted 19th century alquería (a silk maker’s farmstead) in the huerta of Valencia (Europe’s largest agricultural plains).  In ancient times, the cool sea breeze of the huerta dried silk and tobacco in these traditional Valencian homesteads.

Now you can enjoy the luxuries of a comfortable bed, a roll top bath, air conditioning and wifi with an open fire blazing in the winter, while looking out over the orange groves and fields full of artichokes and in the summer, the chufa leaves sway like a sea of green when viewed from the terrace. Chufa or tiger nuts make a local milk called horchata which is a speciality of Valencia. Learn how this refreshing drink is made and enjoy it with a delicious pastry called a farton in an horchatería just across the fields.

Valencia is the home of paella. Have fun learning to make your own and opt to pick up some traditional Valencian cooking skills from one of the locals, who will show you where the rice comes from. Pick your own artichokes and beans to add from your garden while you cook the paella on your terrace.

Cycle the 20 km route around the huerta which runs along the ancient Camino del Cid, a track that joined Valencia to Tarragona, Burgos and Sopria, from Roman times. Or choose the flat one km country lane that leads across the fields to the beach and a busy bar full of bars, restaurants and a shopping centre. Or venture further afield into the mountains from where you can climb a rocky outcrop and enjoy spectacular views of the plains and sea.

Spend the morning on the sandy beaches that stretch either side of the city and the afternoon aboard a traditional eel fishing boat on the largest wetland in Europe. Look out for herons amongst the reeds trying to catch fish in the warm waters of the Albufera.

Have breakfast with the farmers at the local bar then catch a tram and explore the vibrant and historic city of Valencia or cycle to a country train station to catch a train to Sagunto, to see its amphitheatre and Roman walled citadel. Or visit the magnificent Moorish castle of Xativa and a local winery, amongst the orange groves of Gandía.

Take a relaxed walk at sunset (maybe with a donkey for company) or visit the orange trees of Valencia for a cookery workshop amongst the trees and explore the delights of the huerta and learn more about the rich history of this fertile land.

Our reservations advisor will happily discuss the above experiences with you and help you to decide on which experiences you would like to include to make the most of your stay.

You will be met at Valencia airport by one of the Rustic Escapes team. Transport is not required as there are tram stations with direct connection to Valencia city only 1/2 km from the house. Guests enjoy unlimited use of 5 bicycles and bars and restaurants are easily accessed.

You will be taken to your accommodation at Partida de la Mar and your local representative will welcome you and give you an overview of all the places and experiences you can enjoy during your stay. You will enjoy a welcome drink.

You can take a walk across the huerta to a local horchata bar to savour the horchata and fartones, a refreshing tiger nut drink and a delicious pastry. Maybe take the bicycles and cycle down to the beach, restaurants and bars in nearby Saplaya or around the huerta, which can take you for 20 km across the largest agricultural plains in Europe. The cycle lane follows an ancient track which linked Valencia with Tarragona, Burgos and Soria, known as the Camino del Cid, providing access up the coast since Roman times. Catch a tram into the city of Valencia and see this vibrant city with its markets, squares and beautiful, historical buildings. Or simply relax on the terrace and watch the sun set over the fields full of artichokes and oranges.

A welcome hamper will be waiting for you including local produce for you to enjoy during your stay.

In the evening your local representative will collect you and take you down to the city to the mercado de Colón area where you can enjoy a stroll around the shops and have an evening snack and a drink. When you are ready they will be waiting to collect you and take you back to the farmstead.

Day 2   Guests are welcome to alter any of this itinerary to include alternative experiences. Please see details in Additional Experiences.
You will be picked up from the alqueria by your concierge who will take you to Albufera lake passing Valencia city on the way. If you are only in Valencia for 3 nights you may like to visit the City of Arts and Sciences on this day.

See the rice fields on the way and stop off at the lake to admire the views. Visit the El Saler beach for an aperitif and a stroll on the beach. Have lunch in the village of El Palmar, in the centre of the lake, crossing narrow bridges to get across the mud flats. Enjoy a free taster of All i Pebre (a Valencian speciality of eels and potatoes). You will enjoy a boat ride on the lake and can look out for herons and other migratory birds that live on the largest wetlands in Europe.

Day 3
You will be collected by your concierge and taken to Valencia where you can visit the famous Central Market and buy provisions for supper. We will take these back to the alqueria for you while you visit the historic centre, being sure not to miss the Lonja, the Miguelete, the Cathedral, Virgin Square, the Palacio Dos Aguas and  Museums of Silk and Ceramics. An optional city tour can be provided should you prefer to visit the city with a guide. When you are ready to return home simply telephone and we will collect you.

In the late afternoon/early evening, you can enjoy paella which will be cooked for you at home by a local expert - you can help with the preparation of this famous Valencian dish and learn the secrets of Spanish cooking or just observe and enjoy eating it!

After the city visit return home and take the bicycles around the huerta and along the historic Camino del Cid or visit the Museum of Horchata and Chufa to see how horchata is made, enjoying this refreshing drink with a fartón in a local horchatería.

Day 4 onwards
There are so many things to do - something for everyone. Please refer to our Additional Experiences for a few ideas. You can opt to arrange for a further day with the concierge or relax and take it easy. Take the bicycles out and cycle along the historic Camino del Cid or down to the beach. Visit the local farmers' bar, Les Tendetes, for breakfast or a tapas lunch or La Mozaira restaurant for a special meal. Take the tram to the port to visit the rice museum or into Valencia and visit the modernist area or the Bioparc or Aquarium. In the evening cycle to Ca Xoret, a typical Valencian restaurant or ask your local representative for a drop- off service to the city.  See Additional Experiences for concierge accompanied experiences which would be add-ons.

Day 5
One of our concierges or your local representative will collect you at your leisure. Choose an experience from the list of Additional Experiences. The day's visit, with concierge accompaniment, is included in your escape.  Maybe you would like to visit the orange tree area of Valencia and enjoy a paella in the open air. Our expert farmer can teach you another of the many paella recipes; cauliflower, wild garlic and ribs or fish for example. Perhaps you would like to drive up into the mountains to see the hilltop village of Serra.

Days 6/7
For example, catch a train or use the drop-off service to Sagunto and visit the Roman walled citadel and amphitheatre. Then drive into Sagunto seafront and visit the beach and restaurants or drive up to the mountains and climb Garbí to see the Valencian plains below you, stretching to the sea. Visit the Science museum and the Hemisferic within the renowned City of Arts and Sciences, designed by Santiago Calatrava. The El Saler shopping centre adjoins this and the port and seafront as well as the central park and green river bed and the city centre. Visit the Rice, Silk or Ceramics museums to find out all about Valencia's cultural and economic history.

For longer stays there are many more sights to see and guests can take their time to enjoy the many experiences Valencia and its huerta have to offer.

Our alqueria is in Almàssera, 5 km from Valencia city centre. An alqueria is a typical Valencian farmstead on the agricultural flat plains (called la huerta) between Valencia city and the sea. Surrounded by fields of artichokes and chufa (used for the local drink called horchata) and orchards of orange trees, our guests will be able to immerse themselves in this unique and important farming region and enjoy its rich culture and history.

Partida de la Mar , Almassera, is a traditional Valencian farmstead, located in the centre of the huerta, the largest agricultural plain in Europe, 5 km from the centre of  the historic city of Valencia. Valencia is situated on the east coast of Spain, known as the Costa del Azahar, or Orange Blossom coast.  The farmstead  is only one km from the beach and the harbour of Port Saplaya, which has restaurants and bars and a shopping centre.  A five minute walk takes you to a tram station in either the nearby town of Almassera or Meliana, with quick access to the city centre and between these runs a cycle and pedestrian track which spans the length  of the huerta, for over 20 km. This runs along the ancient Camino del Cid which, in Roman times, linked Valencia to Tarragona and on to Soria and Burgos. A bicycle ride away are several bars serving the local speciality drink  called horchata and made from tiger nuts. Also nearby are several excellent restaurants serving local farmers' breakfast and lunchtime tapas and paella, which originated in this area. In the nearby village of Roca, a short bicycle ride away, there is a station which offers direct access to Valencia, Sagunto and Castellón, then Barcelona.

The alquería is surrounded by agricultural land, growing oranges, artichokes, potatoes, onions and tiger nuts or chufa which, in the summer months sways in the breeze like a sea of green in front of the farmstead. It is important to note that this is an agricultural rather than a tourist area and guests can enjoy feeling part of the everyday life of the local farmers.

The house has been tastefully restored with all modern conveniences including air conditioning and wifi, yet has retained much of its original charm with open fires, wood burning stoves and an authentic drying loft originally used to dry tobacco and silk, now the master suite.  While leaving the stonework and original beams, the bathrooms have been restored to the highest specifications with top of the range luxury fittings.

The sleeping accomodation comprises:

The main suite, with a queen size bed and ensuite bathroom with a beautiful copper and antique silver roll top bath and a state of the art La Cage shower. The room also offers two additional beds (built as nests within the wooden walls which housed the drying racks) and could allow the suite to be used as a family room while also serving as large sofas for relaxing in front of the glass-doored wood burning stove.

The second bedroom is small and cosy, with a double bed and furnished with traditional mahogany furniture and a pretty shuttered window. It has its own bathroom across the hallway with a top of the range antique roll top bath and shower.

The third bedroom offers a single option for five guests or can be used for two children. It was originally the donkey's stable and retains its wooden trough and many agricultural features, along with its own antique wood burning stove, while having been totally refurbished with pretty floral prints and white wood cladding. It opens out onto an inner patio which leads into a shower and bathroom. This room is ideal for any guest with reduced mobility.

The living area has a large open plan kitchen, dining and sitting room with an open fire. The working kitchen has been fully integrated into the original farmhouse kitchen.  Throughout the property there is an eclectic mix of antique furniture and artefacts all helping to enhance the guests' authentic farmhouse experience.

The outside area comprises 2500 square metres of seasonal agricultural crops with an area dedicated to a kitchen garden, with a range of vegetables and fruit for the guests to pick as required.  There is a small terrace with a table and benches and a traditional barbecue/paellero with an outside sink. Between May and October a natural swimming pool/alberca runs along the side of the house and is filtered by a specialised pump and natural filter, without the need for chemicals.  The farmstead is surrounded by irrigation channels which regularly fill with fresh water on its way to irrigate the crops. Originally water for the farm was pulled from the irrigation channels by bucket and only recently has running water been installed.

All prices are for up to 4 guests. Prices are in pounds sterling.

Many of the experiences are included free within our escapes.

Our Reservations Team can help you to plan your escape and select experiences.

Reviews

  1. Dear Ella and team;
Many thanks for the great service, communication and recommendations around the area. For us, six girls, we’ve really enjoyed our time here at Rustic Escapes. You guys made us feel really welcome and we enjoyed your hospitality! Our best regards, the girls from Holland

  2. Great property, fantastically restored with great attention to detail. Really enjoyed seeing the area on bikes, leaving here too quickly! Thank you.

  3. We came for four nights, but it was too short. We love how its done to detail. Just what we needed after months of confinement. We were surprised with the pool, what we most enjoyed. We would love to live the experience again. Kisses.

  4. Dear Silvia, For someone who grow up in the country, this Vila is a wonderful experience, specially the felt artichokes and tigerups. This Vila is really well equip and I shall recommended and come again and again and again.
What amazing experience to stay in this beautiful quaint and exceptionally well decorated Vila. It’s a lovely setting down this narrow lane and a far cry at home in Australia. We shall definitely be back. Love every minute.

  5. Our first touch of Spain was better that own visions!. Such a lovely casa! We were at peace from the moment we arrived. Gracias!

  6. (verified owner)

    Dear Tracy, Eduardo and Silvia,
Thanks for such a “delicious” and fulfilling visit to La Albufera and Valencia. It’s a beautiful place to stay. I definitely plan ton come back, thank you for your kind hospitality.

  7. No need for a car! A stylish Rustic Escape in a distinct rural location!
The Farmhouse was perfect and we absolutely loved getting away in the Valencian countryside. If you are looking for a tranquil getaway, this is the place. We were warmly welcomed upon arrival and were provided with an amazing welcome basket full of treats. The house itself, while quite old, has recently been totally redone with tons of authentic farm antiques used to decorate. The bathrooms are especially posh with two lovely full sized tubs and an amazing walk-in shower which sprays from many levels. The house also has a nice garden and we were lucky enough to be there while the tomatoes and peppers were perfect. This place is a really short drive to the beach or about a 20-25 minute bike ride once you find the route and we had fun getting around on the bikes. We’d happily stay there again!

  8. Oh my god. I do not think that I have ever had luxury, history, and peace in the same experience. My family have just returned from a weekend at the Valencia property and we are already planning our next stay. The attention to detail in every aspect of the furnishing, the facilities, the concierge service, the welcome hamper, the bathrobes and so much more was simply outstanding. I could go on and on, but to understand you really need to visit for yourself. I have stayed at many hotels around the world, that have failed to deliver on the promises made by enticing websites. Not Partida del Mar. It was so much more than my family and I had expected.
