No more dates for the parrots!

I can´t believe it! Fifteen years watching while squawking green parrots decimate my date tree; feasting every autumn on my dates. Days and days of nibbled yellow dates lying on my lawn, attracting all sorts of other nasty nibblers! I was always told that the dates in my tree were not the edible kind; the wrong kind; the yellow kind…all manner of reasons (was it me?!!) why my dates were just not good enough. Somehow defective. Story of my life! And now, hurray, apparently everyone was wrong! So imagine my surprise when I visited the Datilero family, here in Valencia, where Rustic Escapes have our lovely Partida de la Mar and Casa de la Campana properties (you must come and see for yourselves!) to see other trees like mine. Yellow dates are edible! They just need ´curing´or maturing with vinegar and they become unctuous and sweet and … delicious. Just like the dates we all love and know. And some people prefer to buy them and eat them yellow. They last longer and in the run up to Christmas, slowly mature and brown with time. I can´t believe it. How many hundreds of kilos have those pesky parrots eaten over the years. Making the yearly pilgrimage to silly Tracy´s garden in Valencia. Feasting at my cost. Littering my garden with the discarded stones and nasty nibbled bits they simply couldn´t eat thanks to the hundreds available to them high up in the palm trees in my garden. Enough! No more! Next year I shall join the date farmers, harvesting our fruit; which is fitting as I have recently, as you know, become a farmer. I´m a date farmer. Una Datilera!

No puedo creerlo! Me preguntaba. Típico. Mis dátiles no valían.
